Apple has begun sending Lock Screen notifications to iPhones and iPads running outdated software versions, directly alerting users about active web-based attacks exploiting their devices.

“Apple is aware of attacks targeting out-of-date iOS software, including the version on your iPhone. Install this critical update to protect your iPhone,” the notifications read. The alerts come in response to the discovery of the Coruna and DarkSword exploit kits being actively deployed against unpatched devices.

Apple also noted that it is “not aware of any successful mercenary spyware attacks against a Lockdown Mode-enabled Apple device,” recommending Lockdown Mode for users unable to update their devices. This marks an unusually aggressive approach from Apple, which typically does not send direct lock screen notifications about security threats.
