Apple issued an urgent support document urging users still running outdated iOS versions to update their iPhones immediately to protect against active attacks leveraging the powerful Coruna and DarkSword exploit kits.
“If you’re using an older version of iOS and were to click a malicious link or visit a compromised website, the data on your iPhone might be at risk of being stolen,” Apple warned. The exploit kits use watering hole attacks via compromised websites to deliver malware to unpatched devices without user interaction.
Devices running iOS 15 through 26 with the latest updates are protected. For older devices that cannot update to the latest iOS, Apple backported fixes to iOS 15.8.7 and 16.7.15. The company also recommended Lockdown Mode as an alternative for devices that cannot be updated at all.
“Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products,” Cupertino noted.
