A new class action puts Apple’s App Store security promises on trial after a counterfeit bitcoin wallet app drained nearly $1.84M from three user accounts while remaining available for download despite multiple warnings.

The plaintiffs – James Ramirez ($875K lost), Christopher Ellis ($840K lost), and Jalen Delgado ($120K lost) – argue that Apple’s marketing claims about App Store safety created a false sense of security. The legitimate Sparrow bitcoin wallet has never been available on iOS, yet counterfeit versions have appeared in Apple’s storefront multiple times.

The legal filing targets the contradiction at the heart of Apple’s platform defense: the same company that warns regulators that sideloading and third-party stores would endanger users allowed a known fake wallet to drain customer accounts. The complaint calls this a breach of California consumer protection law.

Sparrow Wallet developer Craig Raw has publicly documented the problem for years. In January 2024 he noted a fake version remained on the store despite multiple reports. More recently, Raw said Apple flagged his own developer account for termination when he submitted a placeholder app showing screenshots that said Sparrow is desktop-only – though Apple later reversed the decision.

Apple responded that it removes impersonating apps and terminates associated developer accounts, and noted that it blocked over $2.2B in potentially fraudulent transactions in 2025. The plaintiffs seek a jury trial and reimbursement of all lost funds.
