iOS 27 notes name a memory defense limited to three chip families

Apple's iOS 27 release-candidate notes describe a hardware security layer that only A20 Pro, M6 and S11 chips can run.

A layer of memory protection that Apple has been building for two chip generations surfaces in the developer notes for next week’s software, and it stops short of the most expensive desktop in the lineup.

Filed beneath a New Features heading inside the Hardware Security section of the iOS and iPadOS 27 release-candidate documents, the item carries the tracking number 152103975. Apple names the instruction set arm64e.x1 and credits it with hardware and performance instructions, one of which, CPA2, is said to firm up MIE. App makers reach the protection through Xcode rather than through any Settings menu, using what Apple calls an enhanced security pane alongside a build setting.

The newest Mac Studio goes without

The cutoff falls unevenly this month. Apple lists the base Mac mini with M6, yet the upgraded mini and every Mac Studio configuration use M5 Pro, M5 Max and M5 Ultra silicon, so the pricier desktop reaching stores September 22 goes without. Only chips from the newest generation qualify at all: A20 Pro or later in handsets, M6 or later in Macs, S11 or later in watches. The protection layers onto Memory Integrity Enforcement, the always-on memory safety system Apple introduced last year around the A19 and A19 Pro chips inside iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, and this second level went unmentioned in that research write-up.

Apple has stayed quiet on whether its own software uses the pane, whether third-party apps must be rebuilt for the new chips, and whether the block survives unchanged into the shipping build. iOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate and watchOS 27 land Monday, September 14.
