HomeView camera code puts a green light on every stream

Firmware strings show Apple's HomeView hub can stream and record through its built-in camera, with an indicator light, a tone and a hard block on remote activation while anyone is home.

Camera modes found before the hardware ships

Apple’s incoming home hub carries a camera privacy design already written into its software. Strings inside HomeView Software 27.2 describe four states for the built-in lens: off, activity detection only, live streaming, and streaming with recording enabled.

Scheduling lets those states differ by occupancy: one rule for a full house, another for an empty one, a third overnight. Code sleuth pdfu surfaced the settings on November 2, before the device reaches stores on November 13 at $299.

Indicators the household can hear and see

The strings outline a green light on the display whenever a stream opens or a recording begins, paired with an audible tone, plus a notification to home members whenever camera settings change.

The most pointed restriction concerns who can start a stream. Camera activity cannot be triggered remotely while anyone is inside the home, so a session has to begin at the HomeView itself. That closes an obvious route for someone with account access to watch another occupant unobserved.

A related Home app string suggests the hub may capture still frames to refresh its preview when the Home app is open on a household member’s device. Those captures carry the same green light.

Nothing announced, nothing guaranteed

Apple has not described a camera for HomeView, and settings found in shipped firmware do not confirm the capability will reach buyers. Features have appeared in device software before without ever shipping.

The choices do match how Apple handles the rest of the home. Face recognition and activity zones would be configured in the Home app rather than locally on the hub.

For a device meant to sit in a shared room, the visible and audible signals matter more than the feature. A camera whose operations advertise themselves is harder to misuse.
